A Glass Wall & A Glass Box in Petone

Multinational Companies may these days wish to adopt local styles to be 'good citizens' in the places they ply their commerce but in the past they have been unabashed in taking their corporate styles with them. Petone has two examples. One is Unilever's glass box in Jackson Street and the other is the (former) Ford Factory in Seaview which has a glass wall along its north side.

Both buildings make a worthwhile contribution to our architectural landscape.

Factories are important in the history of the Modern Movement. In particular the Peter Behrens A.E. G. High Tension Factory of 1909 "represented the culmination of his efforts to give architectural dignity to a workplace".

Banners

Philosophy House today hosted a well attended show by established artists.

This banner was on display in Abel Smith Street.

As we now know, it being October 18, all but one of the 18 defendants in the firearms case have been committed for trial.

WeekEnd Bliss

For overnighters on Matiu /Somes Island, or the sailers on this yacht moored to its west the tranquility makes it it is difficult to believe that the city is only six kilometers distance.

Some canoeists ventured ashore.

The Lighthouse:

27 -35 Mercer Street

The Dominion newspaper was founded in 1907. This handsome building from 1928, now converted to apartments, gives an indication of the importance it once had. The architects were Crichton, McKay and Haughton.

Baroque Splendour

It is difficult for a modern building to compete in its contribution to the streetscape with William Turnbull's 1907 Lambton Quay home for booksellers Whitcombe and Tombs. (Now Whitcoulls).
