Depression Days
In the depression years of the 1930s it was not uncommon for men to take to the Westland hills and look for gold. A repeat of that may not be imminent yet but there are places where you can practise panning for gold without a license. Many are also picnic spots, offer walks and can be used for camping. We have listed these places as attractions in DayOut.Saturday, September 13, 2008
Wellington Walker
Alec Thorpe's ambition is to walk all the streets of Wellington. When the weather is fine he travels in from Paraparaumu to pursue his goal. He passed down our street yesterday.

Like Caleb Smith who walked the streets of Manhattan Alec marks off the streets on a map as he goes.
